Chapter 9

Larson was relieved for Anya when she finally fell asleep. Her body softened. Her muscles relaxed. She needed rest.

As soon as she was out cold, he eased out of bed, leaving her there. He wouldn’t have moved if she’d been startled, but she was dead to the world, and he wanted to do a few things before he rejoined her.

Ten minutes later, he was at his desk in his office. He’d snagged the shorts off the floor and put them on, but he’d managed to force himself to leave the shirt right where it had fallen. On the floor.

There was a woman in his house.

He chuckled quietly. It had been a damn long time since he’d held a woman. Longer since he’d had one in his home. Way too long since he’d been inside one.

The question was could he tolerate someone in his space, touching things, moving things, leaving things on the floor? Thank God he had an appointment this week with Dr. Walker. She was going to be shocked and pleased. She was also undoubtedly going to give him a lecture on how to keep a woman. That should be a movie.

Without turning on the lights, Larson powered up his computer and started filling his cart. The most urgent thing Anya needed was stuff. If he ordered it now, he could get a good chunk of things delivered by the end of the day tomorrow.

When he glanced at the clock, he was shocked to realize it was only ten. Not too late to call Ajax or Ryker. Granted, it was never too late to call anyone he worked with. They would always pick up the phone.

Leaving the computer open, he headed for the kitchen, snagged his phone off the charging station, and cringed when he noticed five missed calls, all of them from his team. He never left his phone unattended like he had tonight. They were going to rib him for it for weeks.

He called Ajax, who picked up immediately. “Keebler. Glad you called. Everything okay?”

“Yes. It’s all good.”

“Anya’s still with you?”

“Yes. Sleeping. She’s exhausted. Hey, I was wondering if you could do me a favor.”

“Already organized that favor. Ryker left a bag of things on your front porch. Serena and Xena went into action when we got home. They filled a duffle with clothes and emergency hygiene products. He dropped it off about an hour ago. All the lights in the front of the house were off, so he didn’t knock.”

Larson swiped a hand down his face before heading for the front door. He disarmed the alarm, opened it, snagged the bag, and reset everything. “Thanks. This will really help in the morning. I’m about to place an order online, but at least she won’t have to sit around in my T-shirt waiting for clothes to arrive.”

“And would that be a hardship?” Ajax asked. There was humor in his voice.

“Nope.” No sense lying. Let them make fun of him if they wanted. Larson headed for the basement next.
